NSW: First NSW governor vows to progress reconciliation

The first female governor of New South Wales has vowed to promote reconciliation between
black and white Australians and to become the voice for the less advantaged.

Dr MARIE BASHIR has been appointed by the government to replace GORDON SAMUELS who
is to retire in March after four years of service.

A clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychological Medicine at the
University of Sydney, Dr BASHIR is the third female state governor to be appointed in
any Australian state and the first in New South Wales.

The wife of former Sydney Lord Mayor and Wallaby captain, Sir NICHOLAS SHEHADIE, the
couple count Rolling Stones drummer CHARLIE WATTS among their list of friends.

Dr BASHIR, who is also the first person of Lebanese descent to be given the post, has
strong ties with the Aboriginal community from her work on various government working
parties and with the Health Department.
