QLD: Beattie seeks cabinet approval for net gaming laws
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE will seek cabinet approval today for laws to ban sitting
government members from investing in Internet gaming.
The legislation - to be introduced in state parliament on August 17 - will ban members of
parliament from owning shares in Internet gaming companies.
Queensland cabinet will consider the laws during a meeting at the Brisbane Exhibition.
Mr BEATTIE has proposed the laws in response to the so-called net bet affair, which
involved the granting of the state's first Internet gaming licence to a company owned by three
Labor figures.
One of the figures, Labor MP BILL D'ARCY has bowed to pressure from Mr BEATTIE and has
stood down as deputy speaker a week after Treasurer DAVID HAMILL stood aside over questions of
misconduct.
Mr HAMILL granted the licence to the company GoCorp - which is part owned by Mr D'ARCY,
former MP DON LIVINGSTONE and Ipswich City Councillor PAUL PISASALE.
The Auditor-General is investigating the affair.
