NSW: Internet could shut down, wipe out computers: US watchdog

Australia's computer systems are at risk of being completely wiped out by a seriousflaw in the internet and networking infrastructure.

And no solution is available at the moment.

The United States computer network watchdog, the Computer Emergency Response Team, has issued its biggest warning ever.

The 17-page document warns that computer systems worldwide could be shut down, rebooted, erased and used to attack other systems.

This is the first time the team have attempted to get ahead of hackers globally.

The Australian company that supplies Telstra and Optus has been working non-stop for30 hours -- afraid of a major computer catastrophe.

GALVAN CHEUNG of C10 Communications says the New South Wales government and about15 private companies are already experiencing problems -- with their systems being shutdown by remote control.
