NT: Health, energy key priorities for Martin at COAG
DARWIN, Aug 27 AAP - Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin will push for astrong national energy policy and a better health deal at Friday's Council of AustralianGovernments (COAG) meeting.
The chief minister, who flies to Canberra tomorrow morning, today said energy was amongthe most important issues on the meeting's agenda.
The Northern Territory hopes to become Australia's next major gas hub, with work currentlyunderway for a $1.5 billion Liquified Natural Gas plant in Darwin and other major gasdevelopments proposed.
"I will continue my campaign of stressing the need for Australia to have a strong nationalenergy policy and a proper system to encourage the use of clean natural gas," Ms Martinsaid.
"Gas is the key to the territory's economic growth and can provide Australia with along-term and environmentally-sustainable energy source."
The leaders will discuss the findings of the Ministerial Council on Energy (MCE) report.
Ms Martin is also expected to join other leaders in pushing for an increase in thefederal government's proposed five-year health funding package.
She has previously said the package is inadequate, leaving the Northern Territory $16million worse off over the next five years.
