Oly: Foster s bans global warming gases
SYDNEY, Aug 10 AAP - Greenpeace has applauded a move by brewing group Fosters to stop
buying equipment which uses hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) greenhouse gases.
The move by Foster's follows a decision by Coca Cola last month to phase out HFCs in
its refrigeration by the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Greenpeace Olympics campaigner Rupert Posner said the move by the brewing giant is
yet another legacy of the Sydney 2000 Games.
"As an Olympic supporter, Foster's has accepted that it needs to adopt environmentally
friendly policies and practices," Mr Posner said.
Despite Foster's pledge, he said Greenpeace was disappointed they will use 200 HFC
coolers at the Sydney Olympics site at Homebush.
Mr Posner said natural refrigeration systems called Greenfreeze were commercially available
and can be used instead of HFCs.
He said Greenpeace would now be targeting other Olympic sponsors and partners to follow
Foster's lead.
